FAQ: What Kind of HVAC Motor Do I Need?
There are five types of HVAC blower motors and the one you need really depends on your project.
- Condenser Fan Motor: These HVAC Fan Motors are installed in air conditioning units and power the fan blades that cool the unit's condensing coil.
- Combustion Blower Motor: This motor is used in furnaces. It draws air through the combustion passageway and provides an efficient heat transfer.
- Blower Motor: HVAC Blower Motors blow heated air through vents when your heater is turned on; conversely, it also blows cold air if you are using your air conditioning.
- Compressor Motor: A compressor motor is what runs your unit's compressor, whose job is to transfer heat out of your house.
- ECM Motor: ECM stands for "electronically commutated motor." This motor uses electronic controls when it's changing speed. The electronic controls are specific to each HVAC unit and programming can never be done at home. It must be done at the factory where the unit was built.
